“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” – Benjamin Franklin

With all that information competing for readers’ attention, the best way to get some eyes on yours is to make it good enough to draw them to your page and keep them on it. These 5 tips for writing compelling blog posts can help your content stand out.

Use a catchy headline

The first thing about your article that readers will see is the headline. It’s the make or break for whether they’ll be compelled to click on it and also guides you when you’re writing your content.

While crafting a catchy headline, make sure it’s related to your content so the reader can tell what the article is about even before they click on it. Avoid clickbait titles and, where possible, use keywords in the headline for SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Put the reader first

It’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing on making a blog post more SEO friendly, but that usually leads to articles that are barely coherent and mostly stuffed with keywords. While SEO is important, you should always put your reader first.

That means prioritizing providing the information promised by your headline since it was the thing that led them to click on your blog post. Also, make the writing personal by addressing the reader with words like “you,” so it’ll feel like you wrote the post just for them.

Be concise

Because there’s so much content to consume online, people tend to scan through articles instead of reading them word for word. To make sure your reader gets your message, use plain, simple language and keep your article short so the important stuff doesn’t get lost in a deluge of words.

Short paragraphs help with this and the white space makes it easier to absorb content. Make sure you also break your article up with subheadings for easier scanning.

Share your opinion

There’s rarely a topic that’s never been written about before. If you look up something like “how to write a compelling blog post,” you’ll find thousands of results on Google with articles discussing that.

Add images

Even the most interesting articles can become an eyesore if they only consist of paragraphs, especially if they’re long. Adding images to your article that are related to the topic makes them easier on the eye and fun to read.

The number of images you add is up to you, but it’s good practice to have at least one image per subheading for long form content. Quality is a must and you have to make sure not to infringe on anyone’s copyright with the images you select.
