Positivity is the glue that holds us together, especially when things aren’t going well and life seems to be tearing us apart. In a world where we’re all doing our best to get through everything life throws at us – good or bad – a positive mindset can mean the difference between sailing through and completely falling apart.

“Say something positive, and you’ll see something positive.” – Jim Thompson

While staying positive during the good times is a breeze, it’s not so easy when things aren’t going your way or everything feels like it’s stacking up against you. These 6 ways of staying positive can give you the strength to get through it all.

Practise gratitude

According to several studies, being thankful makes people happy and it’s easier to be positive when you’re coming from a place of joy. The feeling of happiness itself is often associated with positive vibes.

During low times, practising gratitude, even for the little things, takes your focus away from whatever might be troubling you. For example, instead of worrying that you can’t afford to upgrade to the latest iPhone, you can be grateful that you do have a phone that works perfectly well and allows you to keep in touch with your loved ones whenever you need to.

Listen to music

A simple fix, but one of the most powerful. Few things can get you or your spirits up like the combination of music and lyrics. Even scientific research shows that music makes you feel more positive through the release of dopamine, perfectly nicknamed the feel-good hormone.

Of course, the type of music you listen to has an impact on how your mood changes. Songs about lost love or heartbreak, for example, are bound to bring your mood down while something upbeat and preppy will do the opposite.

Create a positive space

Your surroundings have a big impact on how you feel, from the people around you to what you see or hear. Being around people who constantly say negative things about you or others will foster negativity within you, and constantly listening to things like the news reporting on sad events like natural disasters will make you miserable.

While some things are inescapable, creating a positive space away from all that stress gives you a way to recharge and feel positive enough to face whatever comes your way with hope and a smile. This can be something as simple ass pending time with your friends at the movies or filling your alone time with motivational podcasts or reading light-hearted novels.

Practice healthy habits

Positivity starts from the inside and as research shows, healthy habits boost your mood. These include basic fundamentals like exercising, getting a good amount of sleep, and eating healthy meals.

Shift your perspective

Every time things go wrong, it’s easy to fall into the pattern of stressing over why those things are happening to you. Questions like this only add to your stress and make you more miserable, making the situation even worse.

Bad things are unavoidable, but your attitude towards them will make them easier to bear. Instead of asking why bad things are happening to you, ask yourself what the situation is teaching you, if there’s any good thing about it (no matter how small), and how you can solve it

“It doesn’t matter what cards you’re dealt. It’s what you do with those cards.Never complain. Just keep pushing forward. Find a positive in anything and just fight for it.” – Baker Mayfield
