You may have heard of a mental block being described as a lack of focus. A stumbling block. Or mental fatigue, as medical professionals like to refer to it. Simple right?

“Pride is holding your head up when everyone around you has theirs bowed. Courage is what makes you do it.” - Bryce Courtenay

Wrong. If you’re the one suffering from a mental block, you’d beg to differ. They can be incredibly frustrating, making you feel trapped and impacting both your personal and professional life. You may feel as though you can’t think clearly or summon up the energy to continue with a task and your productivity levels hit an all-time low. So how can you overcome a mental block?

Take control

Acknowledging that you’re experiencing a mental block is the first step in overcoming it. Take a moment to try to understand why you’re experiencing it. Are you feeling overwhelmed with too many tasks on your to-do list? Or are you afraid that you’re not able to do the job and over-analyzing what needs to be done?

If you’re able to understand what is causing you the anxiety, it will be easier to overcome.

Start small

If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed with too many tasks on your to-do list, take the time to break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Start by completing the easier tasks. The sense of accomplishment you’ll get from having ticked them off your list will give you the momentum you need to continue with the more significant tasks at hand.

Take a break

If you’ve been trying to work through a mental block for an extended period with no luck, you are probably now more focused on the fact that you’re having a mental block than the actual task at hand.

Take some time out. It’ll help clear your mind and will allow you to start with a new perspective when you get back.

Change your environment

You can do this in one of two ways, have a change of scenery or change up your workspace. A messy desk is said to be a trigger for stress and anxiety, which are, in turn, triggers for mental blocks. By cleaning up your workspace, you’ll have less to distract yourself and more mental energy to focus on the task.

If this doesn’t do the trick, try working from somewhere new. It could be a coffee shop or a different spot in the house. Our minds associate places with feelings and activities, so if you’re not getting the work done from your usual space, it may be time to change it up.

Appreciate

If you’re feeling frustrated in yourself, maybe it’s time to spread the love for those who help you on a daily basis in your hectic work life. You can do this by creating your Appreciation Program here, which will in turn lead to you saving more time on other fronts and you won’t need to worry about mental blocks when it comes to gifting!

Lastly, take care of yourself. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you’re not giving yourself enough time for relaxation, you’re not giving your mental health the fighting chance it needs to recover.

Aim for success, not perfection.” - David H. Burn
